New and Updated Legislation Continues to Challenge California Employers
XpertHR, a leading provider of HR compliance, tools and best practice guidance, has opened a new office in Los Angeles to serve hundreds of West Coast employers who need to comply with complex new state and local labour and employment laws.
California has always been at the forefront of employment law legislation. However, with the rollback of federal legislation, local and municipal laws have taken on increasing importance. XpertHR legal editors made over 168 updates related to new or updated legislation in California last year alone.
“Employers in California have been extremely proactive in staying compliant with employment laws; however, the intensity of the new regulations has made keeping up with employment legislation difficult for many human resource departments,” says Scott Walker, Managing Director, XpertHR.
“We’ve seen an increase of 40% in the number of clients we serve in California since 2013 and our new West Coast office will allow us to better assist them by providing local, in-person support.”
Among the many new requirements California employers need to comply with are: sexual harassment training for all employees; increased minimum wages and exempt salary thresholds; expansion of “reporting time” pay; requirement for employers to provide a room other than a bathroom for lactation accommodations; and SB-826, which requires every California corporation to have a minimum of one female on their board of directors.
“Following HR best practices leads to more engaged and productive workforces, which is an advantage to employers, employees and the broader economy,” Walker says.
