Internationally renowned mediator and conflict specialist, Jane Gunn has been elected president of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). Taking over the reins from outgoing president Ann Ryan Robertson this January, Jane will be making history as the first ever successive female president of the CIArb.

The CIArb is an international centre of excellence for the practice and profession of alternative dispute resolution and has over 17,000 members based across 149 countries and is supported by an international network of 42 branches. Jane is a Global Leader in Who’s Who Mediation and featured in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame.

As an internationally renowned mediator and conflict specialist, one of Jane’s main focuses as president will be Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) at work and building the mediation community within the CIArb.

“We are living in extraordinary times of fear, economic crisis, political unrest, isolation and conflict as we have battled with the pandemic virus, racial and gender inequality, terrorism, climate change, financial instability and more, meaning we are having to deal with anxiety, conflict, fear and uncertainty every day. This increasingly opens the door for conflict, so mediation skills are relevant to all of us, as is the mantra that we can each make a difference as individuals.

“I will work tirelessly to promote the underlying values and essential skills of mediation during my presidency. I look forward to highlighting the role of dispute resolution and how these skills can be understood and embraced by the wider community, law, businesses, education and government. An area I am passionate about developing is understanding the crossover impact between what happens at work and its impact on relationships at home and health and visa versa.”

Catherine Dixon, Director General of CIArb said: “We are delighted to have Jane as our President for 2022 and I’m looking forward to working closely with her.  Jane will bring huge passion and experience to the role, and in doing so not only engage with our members but with those who have a keen interest in effectively resolving disputes around the world.”
