With the hiring and retention of staff set to remain tough in 2023, the workplace insights platform Glassdoor has revealed the UK’s top 50 Best Places to Work 2023 as ranked by those who know best – the employees.

Management consulting company Bain & Company claims the UK’s top spot on the Best Place to Work list, with a rating of 4.7 out of 5, followed by software giant ServiceNow and fellow consulting firm Boston Consulting Group.

The top ten UK Best Places to Work 2023 are:

1. Bain & Company (4.7 rating out of 5)
2. ServiceNow (4.7)
3. Boston Consulting Group (4.7)
4. Equinix (4.7)
5. Ocado Technology (4.6)
6. Mastercard (4.6)
7. Google (4.6)
8. Arup (4.6)
9. Salesforce (4.6)
10. Version 1 (4.6)

Thirteen industries feature across the list from hospitality to construction and finance. But tech companies still dominate with a total of 21 employers from the sector recognised, including 6 within the top 10.

A quarter of the employers to the list are newcomers, including Equinix, the Office for National Statistics, SUSE and Heathrow Airport. Ten employers absent from the UK’s 2022 list have rejoined, such as Arup, Cromwell Tools and Expedia Group. Google (no.7 on the list) is recognised for the ninth consecutive year and is the only employer to make the UK list every year since launch.

Unlike other workplace awards, the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards are based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback on Glassdoor by completing a company review about their job, work environment and employer over the past year. The Best Places to Work lists are published annually in the UK, France, Germany, Canada and the United States.

Talking about the list, Glassdoor Chief Executive Officer Christian Sutherland-Wong said “The past year brought extreme highs and lows for job seekers and employees, but despite an increasingly uncertain job market, Glassdoor data shows there are still companies hyper-focused on creating outstanding employee experiences. It’s encouraging to see companies doubling down on employee mental health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, competitive benefits and flexible work environments as we head into 2023.”

Barney Hamilton, Chief Talent Officer at Bain & Company UK explains why he thinks employees rated them the UK’s best company to work for. “The strategic goal of making Bain a great place to work, such that we attract and retain the best talent, is not a new theme for Bain, nor our outcomes based on one-year efforts: indeed, our ability to deliver on this aspiration is very much a result of continual investment to build the right culture, principles and mindset in our business, backed up by policies and ways of working, that ensure that we consistently stay focused on creating great talent outcomes. That’s not to say that we don’t also try to innovate – we have pushed on a number of fronts in recent times: a drive for (re)connectedness and support post the pandemic; a step-change shift in our approach to diversity, equity and inclusion, with policies, such as industry leading equalised parental leave that back that up; innovation in our approaches to recruitment; and investment in new training and development programmes.

Our hope is always that our employees feel and see that we are committed to investing in them for the long term: to help individuals thrive in our business and make our business stronger as a result. The care that we try to offer for the individual – that recognizes that each individual has their own professional goals, personal needs, and need for support in moments in life – draws on a high-touch, tailored model, backed up by policies to deliver. One such recent industry-leading innovation is the equalisation of parental leave for both mothers and fathers, that recognizes importance of support in a key life moment, but that also seeks to level out how careers are managed for both mothers and fathers is a recent illustration of this; another is a proposition that we call Boost, that allows individuals to take one week each year, away from the day to day demands of work, that allows those individuals to focus entirely on their own professional and personal goals.

Our commitment to our people, and to do the right thing for our people and for our clients, is deeply embedded into our DNA. It’s at the heart of all decisions that we make. We recognize that our business succeeds or not as a result of the strength of the team that we build across all our communities and functions, and the attention and disproportionate investment we make – strategically and operationally – reflects that, and ultimately pays back in our ability to attract and retain the best talent, and to grow our business and deliver for our clients as a result.”
