This World Mental Health Day, Perkbox Vivup, experts in employee benefits, wellbeing, and engagement, are urging employers to take proactive steps in supporting their employees’ digital presence to promote happiness at work and achieve that elusive work-life balance.
The recent Perkbox Vivup ‘Always On report revealed concerning statistics, showing that 44% of UK employees surveyed experienced anxiety or stress when they weren’t visibly online, and two-thirds admitted to keeping their status ‘available’ even during breaks.
These figures highlight a pressing need for organisational change, emphasising the importance of trust and support from managers, HR, and internal communications teams in building a culture of autonomy where employees can thrive and remain committed for longer.
Karl Bennett, Wellbeing Director at Perkbox Vivup, explains, “We recognise that while employees have goals to achieve and businesses require productivity, this should not come at the expense of mental health. So many people feel they need to always be on. Employers can play a pivotal role by encouraging intentional use of status indicators. Using them wisely and well helps employees set boundaries that support both work and wellbeing. This helps create more trust between individuals, managers and teams which can be beneficial on many levels. Simple actions, such as promoting ‘do not disturb’ modes during focus periods or advising employees to switch to ‘away’ during breaks – and guiding others to respect those times – can lead to significant improvements in mood and performance.”
Jennifer Healy, Group Chief People Officer at Perkbox Vivup, adds, “Employees often feel conflicted between maintaining visibility and completing their tasks, but organisations can facilitate a balance between the two. By fostering an environment where employees feel empowered to manage their digital status and adopt healthier ways of working, employers can support their mental health while ensuring productivity. Companies that embrace this shift towards healthier digital habits will benefit from happier, more engaged teams, higher retention rates, and fewer sick days.”
By collaborating to create a supportive environment, employers can enhance employee mental health and drive long-term success—not just on World Mental Health Day, but every day.
