In a bid to encourage more employers to appoint disabled people, London-based Deaf and Disabled Peoples Organisation (DDPO), Inclusion Barnet has highlighted the need for clearer guidance on reserving roles.
Employers can reserve any role for a disabled person but many recruiters are unaware of this. Inclusion Barnet worked with workplace experts, Acas, and fellow DDPO Inclusion London to ensure that there is now clearer advice for employers that is widely available for recruiters.
Inclusion Barnet’s CEO, Caroline Collier, was impressed by ‘how responsive and ready to listen Acas were’ and believes the changes they made together can make a real difference:
“To reserve any role for a disabled person, employers only need to state a ‘genuine occupational requirement’ for a person with a specific impairment. With the current rate of employment for disabled people almost 30% lower than it is for those who are non-disabled, we hope it will encourage many more employers to reserve roles in this way”.
The improvements were made possible by funders City Bridge Trust, who support user voice work for disabled people.
