Working from home has become the new norm for people all across the UK. However, staying motivated outside of the office environment can be a challenge. This article will explore how Brits are staying motivated, and what companies can do to help.


Motivation Levels

A census released in March revealed over a third of Brits were working from home. This is over 19 million people. The experience of those who had worked from home before the pandemic varied. 30% had done it before regularly, and for 28% of people it was their first experience. 39% of people said they found working from home tricky but were getting used to it. Fast-forward to June and another survey showed that 70% of people believe they could be as productive from home as they were in the office. However, in the same survey, 45% of people admitted they struggled with staying motivated.


Staying Motivated

It’s clear that people have adjusted to working from home during this past year but motivation remains a struggle. Parcel2Go who offer comparison prices for postage costs offered some helpful tips. They suggested creating a routine to help draw the line between work and home life. This is incredibly important as if they’re happening in the same place they can become blurred. Also, regular communication is necessary. Just because physical meetups are not allowed, doesn’t mean you have to stop talking to people.


One Step at a Time

It’s easier said than done to set up a schedule to stick to every day and regularly communicate with colleagues and friends. Some days, motivation is harder to come by than others. On these tough days, there are little steps to take to motivate yourself. For instance – the 10 minute rule. This is where you tell yourself to work at something for 10 minutes. It breaks down the task and encourages you to get going.


How Companies Help

Companies need to ensure they’re offering support for their employers in whatever form they need – whether it’s work-related questions or offering a space for them to socialise with their colleagues. Phil Woodbridge, from Parcel2G0, spoke about motivating his team. He explained how they used many methods of contact to ensure to adapt to everyone’s needs, from a simple phone call to Google hangouts. Plus he highlighted the importance of taking some time out from working to take part in team activities, such as Pictionary or fun facts. Mr Woodbridge said, “Making sure that people know we are there but to also give them time to themselves – we are all in this together.”
